Unique Beam Signing and “Topping-Out” Takes Place For HELIX Building

In early 2022, a unique project began to help commemorate the final steel beam placement, or “Topping Out,” for the Healthcare, Educator, Leaders, & Innovators Complex building (HELIX) on the Health Sciences Campus. Under normal circumstances, this event would be a public celebration, complete with a beam signing where faculty and staff sign their name or leave a message with markers on the beam before being lifted to its final position.

With the pandemic making a public gathering impossible, U of U Health’s project team partnered with the project’s general contractor, Okland Construction Company. Together, they came up with a unique solution that not only preserved the beam signing component, but also guarantees the names and messages from faculty and staff will never disappear.

Play the video below to learn about the solution and see how it was made possible.
