In August, 2020, U of U Health will begin Phase 1 of a multi-year construction project on North Medical Drive that will ultimately result in greater accessibility to the main medical campus, as well a new level of safety for patients, visitors, faculty and staff.
Approved in 2019, this project will take place over three distinct phases that will forever change the face of the main medical campus on North Medical Drive between Mario Capecchi Drive and Huntsman Cancer Institute.
Driving the need for this change are the construction of two primary structures in response to our community’s needs:
1. The Huntsman Cancer Institute's Katherine F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women's Cancers, which broke ground in September 2019;
2. A new parking structure immediately north of University Hospital and adjacent to the Katherine F. Kirk Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care and Women's Cancers.
As these two exciting patient-centered projects evolve, a variety of construction-related activity is planned in this area that will serve our community for generations to come by providing more parking options on the medical campus and, most importantly, improve patient access to University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Clinical Neurosciences Center, and Craig H. Neilsen Rehabilitation Hospital.
Commuters in the area can expect extensive construction activity through 2022 that will include:
• Expansion of northbound Mario Capecchi Drive at North Campus Drive.
• Installation of traffic circles at the current intersections leading into and out of University Hospital, and dividing road access to the Clinical Neurosciences Center and Huntsman Cancer Institute.
• Construction of a new parking terrace north of University Hospital.
• Construction of an underground pedestrian tunnel from the new parking terrace to University Hospital.
• Refurbishing the Lot 50 parking terrace adjacent to University Hospital.
