North Medical Drive Utility Location Work Begins April 21

Potholing Map

A project to identify and locate utilities will be taking place in phases on North Medical Drive, from Mario Capecchi Drive up past University Hospital, beginning on Tuesday, April 21, 2020. All phases of the utility location work are anticipated to be completed within 8-10 weeks.

The utility location work consists of cutting into the roadway with high pressure water and vacuuming the debris out of the hole in order to definitively locate underground utilities, such as water and gas lines. Once a utility is located, the hole will be refilled and patched. This project is a necessary step in anticipation of future construction projects.

Because of continued management around COVID-19, being good financial stewards is one of our top priorities, as is the responsibility to our community to deliver safe access now and in the future. This project has been budgeted and planned for several months and needs to move forward at this time. All safety measures have been considered and our construction partners are expected to comply with our revised vendor protocol.

The work will entail shutting down one lane of North Medical Drive at a time. As access to University Hospital is vital, the shutdown will be a rolling shutdown, meaning that as work is completed in the shutdown lane, that lane will reopen and the next lane will be shutdown. At all times, there will be two lanes open heading east to University Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Institute and one lane open heading west off campus.

Travel disruptions from the work are anticipated to be minimal, however those traveling to University Hospital should consider adding a few extra minutes to their commute plans.
